SUBJECT: SUNI August 2025 Newsletter

Dear Neighbors,

August always sneaks up on us—back-to-school announcements hit our inboxes, Costco rolls out Halloween merch, and the last long evenings remind us to enjoy what’s left of summer.

This month, we’ve got a great lineup of gatherings that mix fun with purpose:

  • SUNI Sipper at Waldschänke (Aug 19 · 6 PM): Drinks, community, and Bingo with friends old and new. 🍹

  •  Leevers Locavore School Fundraiser (Aug 23 · 2 - 4 PM): A chance to support SUNI while enjoying local flavors.

  • 🌿 Sunnyside Health & Wellness Festival (Sept 6 · 9 AM–12 PM · Chaffee Park): Live yoga and wellness demos, 25+ local vendors, Wilder the Generation Wild mascot, face painting, caricatures, bike safety booths, and more. It’s free, family‑friendly, and a great reminder to care for body, mind, spirit, and one another.

🚸 Safe Streets, Safe Starts
With Denver Public Schools back in session on Monday, Aug. 18, our streets will be bustling with kids walking, biking, and rolling to school. Please stay alert, slow down near schools, and give yourself a little extra commute time.

Lowering speeds on local streets is part of Denver’s broader Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic-related deaths and serious injuries by 2030—and every driver, biker, and walker plays a role. Want to get more involved? Request a free “Slow Down” yard sign (English or Spanish) by emailing district1@denvergov.org.

Consider joining the Transportation & Infrastructure Advisory Board Meetings, which meet monthly to advise the city on transportation policy (Spanish interpretation available).

Together, we can ensure Sunnyside’s streets are safe for everyone.

We’re also excited to spotlight two local businesses making a difference right here in Sunnyside:

  • Bucket List Community Café — Sunnyside neighbor Vicky Collins publishes this free, hyperlocal news hub powered by student journalists, with 3 weekly newsletters, an active social media presence, and a monthly KGNU radio spot.

  • Birch Road Clubhouse — A one‑of‑a‑kind membership lounge in the Highlands, offering a sun‑filled workspace by day and a BYOB social club by night—without the bar tab.

Learn more about both in our Business Spotlight section below.

💡 Did You Know? August is Intersectionality Awareness Month, a time to reflect on how race, gender, class, ability, and other aspects of identity overlap to shape our experiences. The term intersectionality, coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989, reminds us to work toward inclusivity and equity in all we do as a community.

See you out and about!

📍 Starting this weekend and continuing all summer, the project team will be at pop‑up events across the city to hear from residents. An online survey will also be available soon for more input.

Your voice matters! Stop by a pop‑up, share your thoughts, and help create a greener, more resilient Denver.

Spotlight On... Birch Road Clubhouse

Birch Road Clubhouse is a membership space, much like a gym or a coworking space, but focused more on the social side of life. Members have access to the 3000+ sq foot lounge, dining room, and outdoor patio every day of the week from 8:00 AM to 1:00 AM via a fingerprint scanner for only $145/month.

The sun-filled lounge is a great place to work during the day when you're looking for a change of pace but get frustrated with the noise or crowds at coffee shops. In the evening, join in an exclusive members event or invite in friends for a BYOB night out. It's not like a bar, and it's better than your living room.

Birch Road offers a night out without the expense for members and guests because it is 100% BYOB, that means no bartenders, no menus, no bill at the end of the night.

Visit www.birchroad.com/the-highlands for more details on membership and to book a visit!
