SUBJECT: SUNI June 2025 Newsletter

Hey Sunnysiders,

Summer has clocked in, and Sunnyside is humming —from our Annual BBQ at Diebolt on June 17th to free bike tune-ups to planning your own block party. This month’s newsletter is your guide to everything heating up in the neighborhood:

  • AnnualBBQ: RSVP for the June 17 SUNI BBQ before the last burger (or veggie patty) is spoken for.

  • Scholar-in-the-Making: See how our SUNI scholarship helped launch Rico Givens-Padilla from North High to a Harvard Ph.D.

  • You Spoke, We Listened: Traffic safety, green space, local biz — your survey feedback is shaping our work.

  • New Meeting Time for Land Use: First Wednesdays of the month @ 6:30 p.m., Zoom in on June 4 to tackle safe routes, housing choices, and more.

  • Permits, Pedals & Picnics: Quick-permit changes, free bike clinics, Denver Days block-party intel, concerts, yoga, rezoning updates, and more.

See you on the patio (and in the Zoom chat),

Warmly,

The SUNI Board

SUNI Scholarship Spotlight: Rico Givens-Padilla

SUNI’s Neighborhood Scholarship isn’t just money—it’s a launchpad. Proof? Meet Rico Givens-Padilla, our 2021 recipient. In high school, he led blood drives and March for Our Lives walkouts, showing North Denver’s activist DNA is alive and well.

That same drive took him to Harvard, where he just finished his undergrad and accepted a fully funded Ph.D. in African American Studies & English.

Rico credits Sunnyside’s scholarship, North’s community-minded teachers, and a neighborhood that “knows resistance is in the soil.” We’re proud to have helped fuel his journey—and can’t wait to see what he does next.

Read his full story here.

Update from Council President Sandoval: Vibrant Denver 2025 Bond

The work to decide which projects the bond will fund is now underway. Watch a recording of the subcommittee orientation and explore more than 5,800 survey responses.

Community-led subcommittees are evaluating the first tranche of proposals from residents, city agencies (based on the 2025-2030 Capital Improvement Plan), and organizations across Denver.

Each project is weighed against five criteria: community benefit, equity, economic impact, health/safety/environment, and readiness.

Stay involved! Help ensure these are catalytic projects that strengthen our communities and reflect our values. Attend a meeting, share your thoughts, and stay engaged.
