SUBJECT: SUNI February 2025 Newsletter

Hello, Sunnyside!

Black History Month is a time to honor the achievements, contributions, and history of Black people, particularly those of African descent.

This month, we reflect on the significant impact of Black individuals throughout history—from political leaders and civil rights activists to cultural icons and everyday heroes. In Denver, we celebrate figures like Edna Wilson-Mosley, a civil rights activist and educator who became the first Black city council member in Aurora, Colorado, and Dr. Justina Ford, Colorado’s first African American female physician who served the Black community for over 50 years.

We’re also excited to share this month's updates and opportunities, including our SUNI Sipper at El Jefe on February 18th, new business member spotlights, and an important Land Use meeting on February 13th.

Don't forget to apply for the Denver Park Trust Community Grant if you have an idea to improve our local parks, and stay informed on city updates regarding noise ordinances and sidewalk repairs.

Let’s continue working together to make Sunnyside a place of opportunity, growth, and unity

Modernizing Parking Requirements

The proposed rule changes would remove minimum parking requirements from development regulations, which now require a minimum number of parking spaces based on the proposed use and zone district of each project

Along with parking requirements, the city is updating its Transportation Demand Management requirements to ensure that new developments minimize their parking demand by offering subsidized transit passes and supporting car share opportunities.

Near Northwest Area Plan Moves to Implementation

The Near Northwest Area Plan, adopted in January 2024, sets a 20+ year vision for Chaffee Park, Sunnyside, Highland, and Jefferson Park. The first step is a rezoning effort to strengthen commercial areas and align future growth with community goals. Share your voice at the Planning Board Public Hearing on January 15 or the City Council Public Hearing on March 10. Details on how to participate and watch live are available online! 📍✨

Proposed Noise Ordinance Changes

Some Key Changes

• Expanded operating hours for trash and waste equipment to 6:00 am–10:00 pm (previously starting at 7:00 AM).

• Reduced operating hours for snow removal equipment to 7:00 am and 10:00 pm (previously 5:00 am– 11:00 pm).

• Increased allowable noise level for festivals or “public noise producing events” to 85 dB(A) (previously 80 dB(A))

• Increased allowable daytime and nighttime noise levels for commercial and industrial premises that existed prior to adjacent residential properties.

• Added language requiring mufflers for the operation of motorcycles manufactured on or before December 31, 1982.

• Removed motor vehicle specific maximum noise levels. Motor vehicles with auxiliary equipment will be subject to general allowable sound levels based on the time of day and premises type (residential, commercial, industrial, or public).
